DLC Coating
In recent years, a new generation of coatings has been strongly developed with visible commercial success. Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings offer the advantage of having high hardness (1500 – 3200 HV) as well as a much lower coefficient of friction (5 to 10 times lower) than traditional hard layers such as TiN, TiCN etc.
This unique combination of features has created new possibilities for improving technical parts such as engine components etc.Additionally, these coatings are generally biocompatible and therefore suitable for food contact and medical applications.
Substrate selection is based on various factors such as adhesion requirements, wear mode, contact type, friction regimes encountered during operation, applied load, and other metallurgical considerations.
These coatings offer a unique combination of high hardness and low coefficient of friction compared to traditional PVD coating (TiN, CrN, AlTiN, etc.) and soft coatings (solid lubricants: such as molybdenum disulfide).
